SUMMARY:ICC English and Language Studies presents Between the Lines: Russian Fairy Tales
DESCRIPTION:Years pass, and we grow older, but in our hearts we are always children. Some of us still dream of a magic wand or of being a wizard. Or at least we think with a smile of the bedtime stories that our parents told us during our childhood. Miss that time? Come and listen to Russian fairy tales (and even act some of them out!). Learn some new facts about the Russian culture and mentality by getting to know Russian folk tales. Presented by Anastasia Chernetskaya. SUMMARY:ICC English and Language Studies presents Between the Lines: The Americanization of Pat Tillman
DESCRIPTION:Where Men Win Glory is the story of Pat Tillman, an Arizona Cardinal who left professional football and made the ultimate sacrifice for his country while serving in Afghanistan, post 9-11. That is how our government and most of our media portrayed him after his death, but Jon Krakauer's investigative account into Tillman's tragic death opens up many more questions about wartime propaganda, patriotism and truth. SUMMARY:ICC English and Language Studies presents Between the Lines: Angel at His Shoulder: James Lee Burke’s Dave Robicheaux, True Detective as True Believer
DESCRIPTION:Voltaire wrote: “We owe respect to the living; to the dead we owe only the truth.” This sentiment imbues the hard-boiled tradition of mystery novels, where readers expect to find a professional detective, private or law-enforcement officer. James lee Burke’s Cajun hero, Dave Robicheaux, a homicide investigator for the New Iberia Parish, Louisiana, Sheriff’s Department, stands apart from other noir detective heroes. Dave may have his own existential code, but he is also a practicing Roman Catholic. Mystery in Burke’s Robicheaux series is as spiritual as it is human. Let’s explore together how Burke reconciles these disparate elements in one of the finest detective novel series being written today. Presented by Deborah Wilson. This presentation is part of the ICC English and Language Studies Between the Lines lecture series, formerly known as Travels through Literature.

But what does that love of heroes say about us? Why do we need to tell these stories? To answer those questions, we’ll examine the Hero-Myth Cycle, our attraction to heroes of all types, and our deep need for justice. We’ll also take a closer look at a few favorite heroes and their archenemies. After all, a hero needs someone to conquer. What good is Batman if there is no Joker? Presented by Jen Hopp. This presentation is part of the ICC English and Language Studies Between the Lines lecture series, formerly known as Travels through Literature.

SUMMARY:ICC English and Language Studies presents Between the Lines: The "Pop" Culture of Harry Potter
DESCRIPTION:Focusing on the pop culture and the “pops” (fathers) in the series, Dr. Susan Hillabold and Pam Dewey will address Harry Potter as both literary and marketing phenomena. The seven Harry Potter books and eight movies have taken readers and moviegoers on a magical 14-year ride from June 30, 1997, the publication of the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, up to July 15, 2011, the release date of Part II of the final movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. In Book 1 the young orphan Harry Potter first discovers his biological father and yet in subsequent books he learns from a plethora of other father figures, thereby becoming their legacy. From experiencing Tom Riddle’s memories of abandonment to discovering Severus Snape’s self-sacrifice, Harry will negotiate new terms for his own son. Through the wild popularity of the books and movies, and now Pottermore and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter ride at Universal Studios, Harry Potter lives on as part of a worldwide shared culture. This presentation is part of the ICC English and Language Studies Between the Lines lecture series, formerly known as Travels through Literature.

SUMMARY:ICC Art Program presents gallery receptions for Deborah Orloff (Gallery 305A) and Elizabeth Roberts McFalls (Performing Arts Center Gallery)
DESCRIPTION:Gallery receptions will be held at two locations Wednesday, October 19 from 12 pm to 2 pm in honor of the openings of two art shows at ICC: a photography exhibit by Deborah Orloff in Gallery 305A and a drawing exhibit by Elizabeth Roberts McFalls in the ICC Performing Arts Center Gallery. Orloff earned her master of fine arts from Syracuse University and is currently director of the photography program at the University of Toledo. Her current photographic work revolves around the German word, Holzwege, or “wood-path.” In her statement she explains, “These paths meander through the woods and end abruptly; you never know where one of these paths will take you.” Her work will be on exhibit through November 11 in Gallery 305A. McFalls earned her master of fine arts degree in printmaking and media studies from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. She has participated in a large number of solo and group exhibitions over the past several years. She states that, “revealing, concealing, and reinventing truths are central to my art making process.” Photographs of the rural southeast and its people inspire her to create images that reflect the same type of sentiment that one feels when looking at an antique image. Her work will be on exhibit through November 11 in the Performing Arts Center Art Gallery.

DESCRIPTION:Gallery receptions will be held at two locations Wednesday, September 21 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm in honor of the openings of two art shows at ICC: a mixed media sculpture show by Carol Brookes in Gallery 305A and a graphic design exhibit by Tom Lundquist in the Performing Arts Center Gallery. Brookes earned her master of fine arts degree from the University of Iowa. She has been a full-time artist based out of Chicago for the past five years. Her mixed-media wall sculptures, or “constructions” as she likes to call them, are “inspired by everyday objects and materials, textures, and surfaces that I see and discover in my everyday life.” Her work will be exhibited through October 14 in Gallery 305A. Lundquist holds a bachelor of arts degree from California State University Northridge and currently resides in Santa Monica, Calif. He teaches part-time at Santa Monica College. Over the course of his career, he has had numerous solo and group exhibitions. His latest work, the Poissons de Chant series, is created with digital modeling or painting and “illustrates the adventures of a mythical troupe of singing fish from Montreal.” His work will be exhibited through October 14 in the Performing Arts Center Gallery.

SUMMARY:ICC Theatre Program presents U.S. Drag
DESCRIPTION:U.S. Drag* is a satirical look at a generation raised to expect the material world to fall into its lap. Two young women in Manhattan seek love and happiness, but they’ll settle for rent money. Along the way, they volunteer for an advocacy group called SAFE (Stay Away From Ed), named for an elusive serial attacker terrorizing the city (there’s a hefty reward for his capture…). Who is this “Ed” anyway? No one’s ever seen his face, and everyone onstage is beginning to act errily “Ed-like”… Rated R *U.S. Drag - A term coined by William S. Burrows in his 1960’s novel Naked Lunch. It refers to a certain kind of longing unique to Americans.

DESCRIPTION:Opening night September, 1934, is the biggest in the history of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company. World famous tenor Tito Morelli is to perform Otello. Saunders, the harried general manager, hopes this will put Cleveland on the cultural map. Through a hilarious series of mishaps, Morelli is given a double dose of tranquilizers and is believed dead. SUMMARY:ICC Theatre Program presents Recent Tragic Events
DESCRIPTION:From Craig Wright, a writer for HBO's Six Feet Under, Recent Tragic Events is a hip, off-center, dark comedy which draws on the September 11th terrorist attacks for inspiration and asks the question, "What choices do we really have when chance plays such a large part in our lives?" On September 12, 2001, the doorbell rings and a blind date begins in the shadow of tragedy. Recent Tragic Events brings surreal irreverence to the bizarre times that followed 9/11 and the results are a poignant, engaging and very funny evening of theatre.
Rated R for subject matter and some strong language

Gallery 305A is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A gallery reception for the artist will be held Wednesday, March 23 from noon to 2 p.m.

SUMMARY:Photography Alternatives Invitational Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:The Photography Alternatives Invitational Exhibit has been put together to celebrate the non-traditional methods of creating images. It includes lenseless photography such as pinhole and zone plate, alternative printing processes, or use of experimental handmade cameras that use film or are digital. Even traditional silver gelatin prints are included which is becoming a dying art in photography. Four instructors from ICC who all are photographers--Roger Bean, Chuck Flagg, Mary Ruth Ginn and Bob Moulton--each invited four noted artists to include their work in this educational exhibit. The exhibition will be shown in both the Performing Arts Center Gallery and Gallery 305A. Both galleries are open from Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition, the Performing Arts Center Gallery is open on performance weekends; call the Box Office at (309) 694-5136 to check times. Gallery Reception: Thursday, February 10, 4 to 7 p.m.
